Unlike traditional calligraphy, which typically uses a pen to form consistent letters that follow stricter guidelines, modern calligraphy allows you to personalize your hand-lettered art. There are fewer rules, which adds to the fun! You can add color, florals, and other embellishments, and the process is more relaxing and whimsical. It's ideal for beginning calligraphers and anyone else looking to make hand-lettered art without a lot of guidelines.
Modern Calligraphy features step-by-step projects for using a brush pen and paper to form letters, words, and embellishments. Once you've learned the basics of brush lettering, use the helpful tips and gorgeous artwork to create your own elegant-but-fun lettered artwork. Then you can hand-letter anything you like, from address labels on envelopes to party invitations, letters to loved ones, cards, decorative artwork, maps, and so much more.

“Even if you think you are not creative, this book will help you unleash the lettering artist within you,” advises calligrapher Ramos in her beginner-friendly debut. A self-taught letter artist, Ramos found the learning process to be full of “struggles and frustrations,” and to help readers steer clear of such woes, she begins by assuring newbies they can succeed at lettering whether their handwriting is “beautiful or terrible.” Ramos lays out the brush pens and papers required for the craft and offers an in-depth look at the fundamentals of brush lettering, emphasizing the importance of the “thin up, thick down” concept (moving the pen upward creates a thin stroke while moving the pen down with extra pressure creates a thick stroke). Practice strokes are accompanied by helpful commentary (“transitions must be done slowly to create smooth lines,” Ramos writes of the compound curves used to make the letters m and n). After artists have mastered the alphabet, they can customize projects with the author’s creative tips for adding flourishes, embellishments, and creating shadowing techniques for a 3-D effect. Simple yet comprehensive, this is a must-read for budding calligraphers. -

Philippines-based self-taught artist Concepcion Ramos (SevenBrushstrokes.com) introduces the materials needed for modern calligraphy (paper, pens, brushes), then demonstrates calligraphy's basic techniques and strokes in this step-by-step guide. She explains that she was first introduced to calligraphy in 2017, when she was working as an engineer and sought an artistic practice to cope with stress (something she also encourages readers to do). Her book's many calligraphy examples and variations will be useful for beginners and advanced calligraphers alike. At the end, Ramos demonstrates beautiful projects that use calligraphy, like feathers painted with brush pens and floral calligraphy bookmarks. VERDICT A very useful book for individuals looking to learn about calligraphy. Recommended for public libraries.--Jackie Hay
