The making of… • After life took an unexpected turn, the novelist Diana Evans found solace in the joint pleasures of sewing her own clothes and savouring a good story

agenda

Tailor-made • The great return of workwear means one thing: tailoring is the star of AW23. Leaning into the tropes of ties and garters, Dilara Findikoglu paired them with a deconstructed blazer, skirt and silver charms. Luar designer Raul Lopez showed boxy, 80s-inspired shirts and layered skirts, while Schiaparelli matched an immaculately cut blazer and trousers with a patent tie. It’s time to look sharp.

Introducing: Tolu Coker • The designer’s clothes are a love letter to Black matriarchs, the diaspora and her late father

Sweet neutrals • Treat yourself to chocolate-shop shades of toffee, cocoa and beige this season. As temperatures dip, nothing feels cosier than conker-hued leathers, layered buttercream trench coats and earth-toned crochet knits. For a statement piece that still complies with the colour-coding, try The Row’s Half Moon handbag.

Chart the season • Fashion is playing ‘pick a side’. In one corner: loud self-expression, style-as-meme and Julia Fox. In the other: the cult of quiet luxury, the return of Phoebe Philo and a workwear comeback. Where on the grid do you fit?

The cult buy • These pieces are the rising stars of the season — here’s how the rising stars of the ELLE fashion team plan to style them

In conversation: Ayo Edebiri • The Bear’s crowning jewel discusses her project-packed year and her return to comedy after (a lot of) drama in the kitchen

Read the runway • We introduced the books of the autumn to the looks of the season – and they got on famously

And finally… the new rebels • To mark three decades of the British Fashion Council’s Newgen talent incubation programme, the Design Museum will celebrate rollicking, riotous British fashion with its new show ‘Rebel: 30 Years of London Fashion’ (from 16 September). Sponsored by Alexander McQueen, it features the work of over 300 designers, from Grace Wales Bonner to Molly Goddard. And you don’t need to look far this season to find the same energy on the catwalk. See Chopova Lowena’s off-kilter plaid kilts or Marc Jacobs’ moving tribute to the original fashion rebel, Vivienne Westwood, which was full of 90s-style platforms and lashings of layers.

All change

High shine • Dark-wash denim and audacious metallics are a match made in star-strewn heaven. Lamé, sequins, crystals and silver – you can do it all (at once)

Pull focus • Uncomplicated and effortless, monochrome accessories strike just the right note thanks to black-and-white hero pieces you’ll be reaching for all year round

Crème de la crème • The Galleria, Prada’s iconic handbag, is the sartorial scoop of the season. This timeless design has been released in mouth-watering new gelato shades – there’s a flavour for everyone.

In the trenches • As the seasons change, there’s no better time to pull out the hardest-working piece in your wardrobe

Pinky promise • Give old-money style a new-gen makeover by wearing a little-finger ring in a dainty design, with gleaming gemstones or natural pearls

The trend report • From opulent essentials to ostentatious, giddy glamour, the AW23 catwalks were a rollercoaster. Join us for the ride as we...
