In fashion, hope and change • From the bio-revolution to new legislation, there are signs that a change for good is underway in the fashion industry. Dana Thomas asks, what will it take for sustainability to stick?
agenda
Sheer bliss • Take the old adage ‘less is more’ literally. The sheer power of transparent dressing is everywhere this spring, thanks to an abundance of choice from labels including Alaïa, Cecilie Bahnsen and Hodakova. Consider it a move beyond the naked dress of catwalks past. The update is in the styling. Think of the translucent dress as a layering piece, rather than the only piece. Style over wispy slips, vests and trousers and, come high summer, throw on over your favourite swimsuit. This season, a little goes a long way
Introducing: Torishéju • Naomi Campbell walked her debut show in Paris – now, the Nigerian-Brazilian designer is turning to her roots for inspiration
In conversation: Victoria Monét • After more than a decade writing songs for other pop stars behind the scenes, the Grammy-winner is at long last having the year she deserves
Punk redux • While Y2K has dominated streetwear, it’s the grungy 1990s revival of punk that will rule this season. Look to No Doubt-era Gwen Stefani, or the Central Saint Martins campus for an updated take. If the late Dame Vivienne Westwood was the high-fashion mother of punk, consider Chopova Lowena, Charles Jeffrey and Mowalola her unruly offspring, revitalising the look for the modern-day anarchist. The new hallmarks include reworked kilts, subversive florals, kaleidoscopic tartan and a whole lot of leather and lace.
My closet is your closet • Chloë Sevigny’s Sale of the Century was just the beginning – now, It-girls everywhere are selling off their wardrobes. Here’s how to join the resale revolution
A call to armour • Put up a fight in this season’s very literal take on power dressing. Clichéd tropes of shoulder pads and co-opted Wall Street pinstripes are replaced by an altogether tougher decree. For SS24, armour itself is front and centre. Ready to battle it out for a place in your wardrobe is Alexander McQueen corsetry, worn in gunmetal silver, or Knwls breastplates that reimagine the corset as a sartorial shield with directional purpose. Rabanne’s medieval-lite battle dresses, complete with chainmail hoods, speaks to how glamorous this trend can be. Sure, we’re ready to dress to fight the good fight, but designers have come to understand we want to look luxe while doing so. The muse? Joan of Arc, of course.
Top of the pops • The Barbie-ficaton of fashion is showing zero signs of waning. There’s still time to hop on the bubblegum-pink bandwagon by mixing syrupy-sweet hues: embrace your inner Molly Ringwald and lean into everything pretty in pink
Thrills for frills • From off-kilter kitten heels and fanciful bows to frou-frou skirts, this month sees classic silhouettes take on a subversive twist. The devil is in the dainty details
Focal point • Whether it’s a pop of colour through a bold bomber jacket or an outsized, sculptural cuff, embrace the styling power of a single, standout piece
Get stuffed
Powered by pastels • While you wait to switch your out-of-office on for summer, brighten your workwear wardrobe with a hit of cool colouring
The power of three • For years, the idea of mixing metals was controversial. But rules are there to be...
