Shed unwanted pounds and keep them off ONCE AND FOR ALL with Run Your Butt Off!, a back-to-basics, test panel–approved weight-loss plan and beginners' running program that yields sustainable, healthy results. The Run Your Butt Off! program is founded on the simple concept that in order to lose weight, calories burned must exceed calories consumed. No gimmicks, no shortcuts, no silver bullets can circumvent that reality. With this program, you'll learn to burn fat from both sides of the weight-loss equation—the calories in and the calories out—at the same time. Run Your Butt Off! will make you fitter, stronger, and leaner.

This basic guide for individuals interested in starting a program for better health has a good mix of expertise--Bonci is a nutritionist, and Butler and Coates are affiliated with Runner's World magazine. In chapters such as "It Starts with a Single Step" and "Fight the Urge To Sit," the authors provide motivational help while emphasizing the premise that success is based on burning fewer calories than calories consumed. They walk readers through the calculation of their basal metabolic rate and ultimate caloric limitations. Their structured program of exercise progresses from walking to running and culminates in a routine of running for 30 minutes nonstop. The 12-stage program is built so that readers can progress at their own rate, working through the entire program in 12 weeks or taking it at a slower pace. VERDICT A commonsense guide for those interested in gaining a healthier lifestyle through a running program.--Crystal Renfro, Georgia Inst. of Technology Lib. & Information Ctr., Atlanta
