Kathy Nuzum's debut novel, compared favorably to Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, follows a set of twins: one bent on rodeo super-stardom and one content to follow behind. Will is sure of what the future holds for him, but he's not so sure what life holds for his twin brother Denny. The two are as different as night and day, but they both hold with them the memory of a small white scar.

With a slight Western accent, Steven Boyer tells the story of Will and his brain-damaged identical twin, Denny. During their fifteenth summer Will grapples with conflicting emotions. Torn between his love of ranch life and rodeo events and his feelings of obligation toward his brother, Will harbors a combination of patience and frustration. It is only when Denny unexpectedly accompanies him on a forbidden rodeo trip that Will is able to reconcile their relationship. Descriptions of ranch and rodeo life are especially good, with the pace of the narration increasing as the rodeo events unfold. Boyer captures the anger and pain of both brothers with distinct voices. A flash flood, an encounter with a rattlesnake, and the desire for a satisfying future for both brothers keep the listener engaged. L.D.H. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
