Gr 5 Up-Clear and enthusiastic instructions introduce tools needed followed by a range of woodcarving projects. The author intends to inspire children and their adults to use their hands and imaginations for the satisfaction of creating something literally from unformed wood. First, woodworking tools and their uses are presented followed by ideas and instructions for making a variety appealing creations. Each chapter provides illustrated instructions on how to carve personal items (such as combs), stick animals, dolls and puppets, and action toys. The expense and difficulty of acquiring necessary equipment (carving tools, wood) as well as the potential danger and need for constant adult supervision will likely limit the use of the book. VERDICT This is an optional purchase for school and public libraries.-Maria B. Salvadore, formerly at District of Columbia P.L.
