'Girl A' was convicted of murdering three people when she was a child. Now she's missing and a man is dead. The clock is ticking for Scottish detective DCI Christine Caplan to bring her to justice - but the truth may be darker than even she fears . . .
When a body is discovered in the water at Connel Bridge, the police assume it's an open-and-shut case of suicide. But when DCI Christine Caplan is called in to take a closer look, she discovers that darker truths lurk beneath the surface, and suspicion begins to turn to a young woman recently out of care.
Known only as Girl A, her identity remains anonymous, protected under law. Her violent past includes an allegation of the murder of a younger sibling, so the timing of this new death seems too coincidental. Then a vigilante sets her home on fire and she flees, so the 'child killer' is now on the loose - and at risk herself.
As Caplan launches a search for the elusive teenager, looking for connections between her and the dead man, she turns to Girl A's past for answers. And when she gets them, she realizes the truth may be even more sinister.

Scottish coppers Anderson and Costello have their hands full. First, a young woman is pulled from the River Clyde, and the detectives suspect she was murdered by her former boyfriend. Then Costello finds her elderly neighbor Vera with a serious head wound, and it looks like someone tried to rob her. Then the detectives are called to a brutal murder scene where a man has been tortured to death in his attic. Suddenly, Anderson and Costello are pulled off all three cases to investigate a 40-year-old murder. Does their boss know something he's not sharing? The plot is fast-moving and complex; the characters are quirky, with plenty of foibles; and the outcome is both satisfying and surprising. Readers new to the series may find the plethora of characters and their relationships puzzling at first, but those who stick with the twisty tale will be rewarded in the end. Fans of British procedurals who don't know Anderson and Costello should remedy that situation quickly.

DCI Christine Caplan's life is chaotic. Her husband is deeply depressed and housebound, she's just bought a fixer-upper that needs much more work than she expected, and her two teenagers are still recovering from a brutal revenge attack resulting from one of Christine's cases. Now she's investigating the murder of psychologist Ted Maxwell, who's been stabbed and thrown off a bridge. All signs point to his killer being Child A--real name, Gillian Halliday. As a child, Gillian was convicted of brutally killing her pets, two baby sisters, and a teenage friend. Placed under psychiatric care, she's now 18 and deemed "cured," so she's been released. She still writes a blog under the name "Killagal," glorifying the gruesome details of her crimes. But as Christine investigates both Ted Maxwell's murder and the earlier murders Gillian is accused of committing, she begins to believe that there's much more to the story. Despite pressure from her superiors and ferocious antipathy toward Gillian, Christine is determined to uncover the truth. This is a taut, suspenseful police procedural with plenty of dark twists to keep fans riveted.
